England stars Gary Cahill and Phil Jones will NOT retire from Three Lions after World Cup 2018 heartache

GARY CAHILL and Phil Jones will not walk away from England despite World Cup heartbreak.

The pair could not force past Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker or John Stones for a place in Gareth Southgate’s first-choice defence.

But Cahill, 32, has no intention of retiring from international duty — and he has already told the boss he will fight for his place next season.

Jones, 26, who started Saturday’s third-place final against Belgium, is also committed to his Three Lions future.

Southgate said: “Phil has been really unlucky not to be in the team.

“He missed March with us and we had embedded the back three in March. We didn’t want to tinker with that.

“Then, of course, they did so well in the tournament. But I wanted him to play against Belgium because we see him as part of what we’re doing.

“He’s a very good player and a good age — and he can be a part of what we want to do.”

Cahill, who won his place at the last minute because of injury to Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, will also be involved in the future.

Southgate added: “Gary has a desire to still be involved.

“He’s a player we really respect.

“His contribution to what we have done, in terms of how he has been with the group has been excellent.”
